Romans 4:18

[GNT] Abraham believed and hoped, even when there was no reason for hoping, and so became "the father of many nations." Just as the scripture says, "Your descendants will be as many as the stars."

[BBE] (As it is said in the holy Writings, I have made you a father of a number of nations) before him in whom he had faith, that is, God, who gives life to the dead, and to whom the things which are not are as if they were.

[KJV] Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

[NKJV] who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, "So shall your descendants be."

[KJ21] Abraham, against all hope, believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, "So shall thy seed be."

[NASB] In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, "S o shall your (Lit seed descendants be ."

[NRSV] Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become "the father of many nations," according to what was said, "So numerous shall your descendants be."

[WEB] Besides hope, Abraham in hope believed, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, "So will your offspring be."

[ESV] In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, "So shall your offspring be."

[NIV] Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be."

[NIrV] It is written, "I have made you a father of many nations."--(Genesis 17:5) God considers Abraham to be our father. The God that Abraham believed in gives life to the dead. Abraham's God also speaks of things that do not exist as if they do exist.

[HCSB] Against hope, with hope he believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what had been spoken: So will your descendants be.

[CSB] Against hope, with hope he believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what had been spoken: So will your descendants be.

[AMP] [For Abraham, human reason for] hope being gone, hoped in faith that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been promised, So [numberless] shall your descendants be. [Gen. 15:5.]

[NLT] Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping-- believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, "That's how many descendants you will have!"

[YLT] Who, against hope in hope did believe, for his becoming father of many nations according to that spoken: 'So shall thy seed be;'
